CATS ‘N’ DOGS' book section at our Geneva, Illinois,
store specializes in nice coffee table volumes, the best of the cat
cartoon books (naturally), and anything else that strikes our fancy.
Four of our favorites are offered on line. Each of these hardcover
books is small (around 100 pages), but they are large on wisdom and
humor. “What Dogs Teach Us” and “What Cats Teach Us,” both by Texas
author Glenn Dromgoole, employ beautiful color photography and succinct
observations to help us see the world through an animal’s eyes. Whether
learning to embrace the simple joys of life or to nurture our independent
spirits, dogs and cats have much to teach us, as readers of these
books will learn. Also wonderfully photographed, Andrea Donner’s “101
Uses for a Dog” and “101 Uses for a Cat” give us a lighthearted new
appreciation of our four-legged friends' potential. These books will
bring a smile to the face of any reader, from young children to seniors
and everyone in between. |

Ever want to trade bodies with somebody else? Or maybe
switch heads on a particularly bad-hair day? Well, now you can with
Doogies, the unique mix-and-match dog figurine that nearly everyone
has fallen in love with. To start, pick a body. These are “people”
bodies, by the way, representing various jobs, sports, military branches,
special events and so on. Now pick a head in your favorite breed.
That’s right, these are “dog” heads mounted on a little post that
fits right into the people body. That’s it, you’ve done it. You’ve
matched a dog head with a people body and made a Doogie. And what
could be more fun? Here at CATS ‘N’ DOGS we can attest to the number
of Bride and Groom Doogies that have appeared atop cakes at wedding
receptions in the Chicago area. Special occasions create demand for
the Graduate Doogie or the Happy Anniversay Doogie. And more than
a few U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines Doogies shipped out with
our military men and women during the recent war. Our on-line catalog
offers more than 30 Doogie bodies and a comprehensive pull-down menu
of Doogie heads. But if you don’t see the one you need, send us an
e-mail. We probably have it in our store, or can get it. |

Door Stops |

Fabric cat and dog doorstops provide a charming addition
to the home of any dog lover or cat fancier. Our good-looking doorstops
are heavily weighted at the bottom, so they’ll stand up to most any
door. But because they are attractive and fully finished both front
and back, many customers simply place them as accent pieces, perhaps
near a fireplace, in a corner or even on a chair. The fabric images
are by the artist Leslie Anderson who, working from her ranch outside
Flagstaff, Arizona, has garnered a strong following for her animal
portraits and other works. CATS ‘N’ DOGS on-line
catalog features a good selection of both cat and dog fabric doorstops.
This, however, is a product that is available in only a limited number
of breeds, although new designs are introduced periodically. Need
a fun, good-looking doorstop? Well here they are, the perfect marriage
of art and practicality. |

As a young girl Sandra Brue liked to carve animal sculptures
from a bar of soap. That love of art and animals would eventually
lead her to found Sandicast, now the best-known name in animal sculpture
worldwide. “When I started Sandicast in my garage back in 1981 with
only four sculptures – a bunny, fawn, squirrel and Cocker pup – I
realized my dream of creating a business that combined my God-given
artistic talent with my lifelong love of animals,” Brue says. Brue
was born in Chicago and moved with her family to San Diego, where
Sandicast is headquartered, when she was 3. To create a sculpture,
Brue visits live animals and observes their behavior and poses. She
befriends the animals, then creates an original clay sculpture detailed
down to each individual hair. Each Sandicast sculpture is hand cast,
using a mold made from Brue’s original, then hand painted. A final
touch of realism is achieved with the insertion of specially designed
glass eyes. The Sandicast collection is large and Brue introduces
new figures twice a year. We hope you enjoy the figures in our
on-line catalog. If your breed is not included, send us an e-mail
and we’ll advise you about availability. |
